Carbon typescript of a travel diary and military journal, 1940 Feb.-1946 Jan., written by Henry C. McLean while on active duty as Assistant Chief of Staff in the General Staff Corps in the United States Army in the South Pacific. Entries discuss the campaigns in the Philippines, Dutch New Guinea, Leyte, and other areas, with comments on the leaders of the war, especially General MacArthur, Roosevelt, and Truman, and on the actions of the Allied forces. McLean describes the reactions of the troops to the events of the campaign, the death of Roosevelt, a trip to Japan as a member of War Dept. staff in 1945, and the final victory. Volume covering Feb.-Jun. 1940 describes a trip taken from the Philippines to Italy through Indo-China, India, and the countries of the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine. Volumes include numerous black and white photographs of the various locations described, the inhabitants, buildings, planes, ships, tanks, other army officers, and damage in the wake of engagements with the Japanese army. The last volume concludes with an appendix containing maps, statistics, copies of select memorandums and orders, including several of McLean's strategical assessments of various proporsed military operations in the Pacific.
